Boswellia Neglecta — The Forgotten Frankincense Tree
Boswellia neglecta is a rare and striking caudiciform tree native to the arid regions of East Africa — Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia — where it grows in rocky, sun-baked landscapes. A member of the Burseraceae family, it is closely related to the more famous Boswellia sacra, the primary source of commercial frankincense resin.
What sets Boswellia neglecta apart is its dramatic, swollen trunk (caudex) that stores water for survival through prolonged dry seasons — making it a prized specimen for collectors of rare caudiciforms and bonsai enthusiasts alike. The peeling, papery bark and compact, sculptural form give it an ancient, otherworldly appearance that commands attention in any collection.
Why Collectors Love It
- Striking caudex with naturally peeling, copper-toned bark
- Produces aromatic resin with a warm, earthy frankincense scent
- Highly drought-tolerant — ideal for low-maintenance cultivation
- Extremely rare in cultivation outside its native range
- A true conversation piece for serious plant collectors
Care Notes
Thrives in full sun with excellent drainage. Water sparingly — allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Best suited for warm, dry climates or indoor cultivation in bright, sunny spots. Frost-sensitive; protect below 10°C.
