Fockea Edulis

Fockea edulis (also spelled edulia in error sometimes) is a caudiciform plant native to South Africa. It’s prized among succulent collectors for its swollen, sculptural caudex (tuberous base) and its twining vines. Here’s a detailed care guide:

Light for Fockea Edulis

  • Bright light with partial sun is best.

  • Avoid intense midday sun if growing outdoors in hot climates, it can scorch the caudex.

  • Indoors: place near a bright south- or west-facing window or under a grow light.

Temperature

  • Prefers warm temperatures: 18-30°C (65-85°F).

  • Not frost-hardy. Keep above 10°C (50°F) at all times.

  • Bring indoors in winter in temperate climates.

 Soil for your Fockea Edulis

  • Requires very well-draining soil.

  • Use cactus/succulent soil mix or create your own:

    • 50% pumice/perlite

    • 25% coarse sand

    • 25% organic matter (coco coir, compost, etc.)

Watering for Fockea Edulis

  • Water sparingly treat like a succulent.

  • During active growth (spring/autumn): water when the top inch of soil is dry.

  • During dormancy (winter): water very lightly once a month or not at all.

  • Avoid overwatering, as the caudex is prone to rot.

Dormancy

  • Goes dormant in winter/vines may die back.

  • This is normal, resume watering only when new growth appears in spring.

Fertilizer

  • Feed once a month during the growing season with a diluted cactus fertilizer.

  • Avoid feeding in winter.

Pruning

  • Vines can grow aggressively prune to shape or manage size.

  • Regular pruning can help maintain a compact form and highlight the caudex.

Propagation

  • Mostly propagated by seed.

  • Seeds germinate well in warm temperatures (20â-25°C / 68-77°F).

  • Can also be propagated by cuttings, but caudex formation is best from seed-grown plants.

Container & Display

  • Often grown in shallow bonsai-style pots to showcase the caudex.

  • Caudex can be grown above or below soil above is more aesthetic.

  • Repot every few years, raising the caudex gradually if desired.

Pests & Problems

  • Generally pest-resistant, but watch for:

    • Mealybugs

    • Spider mites

    • Root rot from excess moisture
