Mesembryanthemum Mix seeds typically refer to a collection of different varieties of plants from the Mesembryanthemum genus, often known as Ice Plants or Livingstone Daisies. These vibrant, drought-tolerant succulents are prized for their colorful, daisy-like flowers and fleshy, water-retentive leaves. The mix usually includes a range of colors, creating a visually striking garden display.

Characteristics:

  • Flowers: Mesembryanthemum plants are known for their bright, jewel-like flowers that come in shades of pink, purple, yellow, red, white, and orange. The flowers are typically daisy-shaped, with numerous petals radiating from the center.
  • Leaves: The leaves are small, fleshy, and often covered with tiny, glistening, ice-like crystals, giving the plant its common name Ice Plant. These water-storing leaves help the plant thrive in dry conditions.
  • Size: Most varieties stay relatively small, growing up to 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) tall, but they can spread out to cover the ground, making them great for ground cover in rock gardens or borders.

Sowing and Growing Instructions:

  • Light: Mesembryanthemum thrives in full sun. Make sure to plant them in a location that receives plenty of sunlight for the best flowering results.
  • Soil: These plants prefer well-draining, sandy or rocky soil. They are highly drought-tolerant and dislike waterlogged conditions.
  • Sowing:
    • Indoors: Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost in seed trays filled with sandy soil or a cactus mix. Lightly press the seeds into the soil but do not cover them, as they need light to germinate.
    • Outdoors: Seeds can also be sown directly in the garden after the last frost. Sprinkle them on the surface of the soil and gently press them in.
  • Watering: Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, as these plants are drought-tolerant and susceptible to root rot if overwatered.
  • Temperature: Mesembryanthemum plants prefer warm conditions and are best suited for USDA hardiness zones 8–11, but they can be grown as annuals in cooler climates.

Blooming and Care:

  • Flowering: The plants typically bloom from late spring to summer, producing a stunning carpet of flowers. The flowers open fully during sunny days and close at night or on cloudy days.
  • Maintenance: Mesembryanthemum plants require very little maintenance. They are tolerant of poor soils and dry conditions. Deadheading the spent flowers can help prolong the blooming period.
  • Propagation: In addition to growing from seeds, they can also be propagated from cuttings.

Uses:

  • Ground Cover: Mesembryanthemum plants are often used as ground cover in rock gardens, borders, and dry, sandy landscapes.
  • Container Planting: Their compact size and bright blooms make them excellent for containers and hanging baskets.
  • Drought-Tolerant Gardens: Ideal for xeriscaping or gardens that need drought-tolerant plants.
